Environmental Monitoring

environmental monitoring

Requirements for environmental monitoring
Sydvarager Gruve AS shall monitor and have good control of emissions to the environment and ensure that limits are observed.

• Emissions to the recipient
• Discharges to ground
• Emissions to air
• Monitoring of seabed disposal
• Excellent process control
Requirements for reporting
Sydvarager Gruve AS will be in accordance with the license report to the Climate and Pollution Control Directorate (Klif) no later than 1 March each year. Initial reporting of Klif is 1 March 2010.

Results from different measurements will be reported continuously to the authorities; Klif, County Governor of Finnmark, Sør-Varanger municipality and NGOs.

The system of environmental monitoring and measurement of emissions

Limits set by Klif shall be held within the communication times described in the permit and follow the laws and regulations that apply to Sydvaranger Gruve AS activities. It has been developed routines to continuously and systematically examine and evaluate the risks in business that may affect negatively on health and the environment.

Variations in emissions must be within the established values and it should not deviate from what applies to normal operation and to prevent incidents that could cause harm or inconvenience to the environment. Sydvaranger Gruve AS will be in daily activities work to reduce their emissions in all processes.

Results from surveys / monitoring may require further research and studies.

Measurement and calculation of emissions
Sydvaranger Gruve AS will perform measurements and calculations of emissions to air, water, soil and noise.

The poll will be carried out so that they are representative of the company's actual emissions and regulated by limits and other components covered by the reporting obligation.

Measurements and calculations should also be conducted in accordance with documented internal control. Measurement and calculation describes the measurement method and prøvetakningsmetode, measurement period, and the calculation method and the emission factors used. Measurement uncertainty is also considered.

Emissions to the environment
Sydvarager Gruve AS shall monitor and have good control of emissions to the environment, which will be documented and reported internally and externally.

All employees and contractors have an environmental responsibility to reduce emissions to water, land and air.

Acute events / emissions that can affect the environment negatively will soon be reported internally, and whether it has affected the environment negatively to the incident reported to Klif, local authorities and relevant stakeholders:

• Emissions to the recipient
• Discharges to ground
• Emissions to air
• Monitoring of deposition on the seabed
Emissions to the recipient
Sydvaranger Gruve AS shall routines prevent hazardous substances, which cause damage to the environment, groundwater and water supplied.

Discharge Activities in the mining area, Bjørnevatn
It created a program to monitor the runoff of surface water, which is judged by how mining can affect the recipient. Every other month is taken manual water samples at five selected points where blasting operations. Bioforsk Earth and Environment at Svanhovd perform sampling and the samples analyzed by ALS Laboratory Group.

The existing open pit on a continuous drainage, the existing open pit is planned to be taken into operation, the accumulated water is pumped to Langfjorden or Pasvik watershed. Water quality should be checked before pumping can be done to ensure that water can not give a negative effect in the recipient.

Emissions to the recipient from the refining process in Kirkenes
The activities that cause emissions quay is dust emissions associated with the flushing of conveyor and transport tunnels. Flushing Water well and collected in three pumpesumper, sligen in flushing water settled before the water is pumped to the recipient at two locations. Water from silos go out to sea through the mud bank south of the quay and the water from the underground system goes into the pipe three-four meters below the quay. Slig collected from pump swamps loaded into the product stream again, and thus is not a waste product.

Carriers in tunnels requires the butter tion and maintenance and in any game shall be collected and handled as hazardous waste.

No Water consumption is measured by flushing, and in conjunction with the pumping of flush water to the recipient taken water samples. After the first year of operation to the test results reported to Klif and in light of the report will Klif assess any need for action.

It is believed that there may be a need to flush the tunnels eventually finished loading ships.

Overflate-/grunnvann from the tunnels pass and cleaned in a number sandfangere before the release goes to the recipient. Sand Fang Fighters checked and cleaned if necessary.

Emissions to the recipient from the processing plant
Discharge of oil and chemicals from the process should be prevented with good control, and maintenance. If there is any game shall be collected and handled as hazardous waste, decontamination should be performed with great care to prevent release to the recipient. Oil Mixed water should be cleaned in the oil separator or equivalent treatment is called before the discharge reaches the recipient. Unless the plants are the oil mixed water (slop water) is collected and handled by approved waste contractor.

Emissions to ground
Sydvaranger Gruve AS will be secure with routines and prevent hazardous substances supplied to reason that may cause harm or inconvenience to the environment.

In the daily activities of the transport machinery in the mining area and activities in outdoor spaces that can give release to the ground.

Handling of fuels, oils and other hazardous substances to be carried out according to fixed procedures and with great care not to inflict the reason these dangerous substances.

Emissions of dust to air
Emissions of dust from the ongoing processes shall be limited so that it does not lead to negative consequences for the environment and health.

Sydvaranger Gruve AS will hold a current overview of dust emissions, which should be restricted to take action if necessary. Fugitive emissions from the production process and outdoor areas shall be limited as much as possible.

Activities that generate dust to the external environment is monitored separately, which is drilling, transport and crushing processes.

Noise from operations
Noise from activities shall be restricted to prevent discomfort on the environment and health. The stipulated noise limits apply from ordinary activities and should be followed.

Sydvaranger Gruve AS developed an early plan for noise measurement, and measurements would be conducted in two stages. The first stage is completed, and measurements were conducted before the start of business, the second stage will be carried out during normal operations. The first stage is set to the base level, ie the normal ambient noise.

Noise measurement for the second stage will be carried out according to the Nordic calculation of noise from transport and industry.

The results are reviewed according to set noise limits, see table. If it proves to be difficult to comply with the established noise limits to actions carried out in each specific case.

Will be carried resipientundersøkelser in the fjord system every five years, and the first time in 2011. It shall enter into the relevant chemical and biological investigations in the monitoring program.

Monitoring shall be submitted to Klif for any comments three months before implementation. Results from monitoring should samm enfattes in a report and sent to Klif in connection with their reporting year following implementation.

Chemical Handling
Sydvaranger Gruve AS handles a variety of chemicals in industry and in maintenance processes.

The company leads registers of the chemicals, where chemicals are used in processes are MSDS available. It will be made continuous risk assessment of the damage effects chemicals can cause to the environment and health.

An electronic stoffkartoteksystem acquired, and all chemicals handled in the business to be continuously recorded, risk assessed and reviewed according to the substitution principle. The system will be available to all employees.

Waste
Sydvaranger Gruve AS will work to limit waste from all processes and will hold a recycling rate of waste generated in the business. The handling of waste shall be in accordance with existing rules set out in the waste. Sydvaranger Mine has produced a waste plan for waste generated in the operational processes and maintenance, as well as a minerals waste plan specifically for the large quantities of mineral waste, gråberg and retirement.
