Sustainable operation and waste disposal
Waste Management Plan Sydvaranger Gruve AS has a clear objective of sustainable extraction of iron ore in Bjørnevatn and has worked with this system before startup.
The company established before the start of mining operations a plan for how waste (gråberg) and tailings (waste separation) from the mining operation could be utilized. In this plandokumentet discussed possible alternative uses. Although today there is no good alternative ways to utilize waste masses see the company all the time on solutions that create added value for society and the company.
Mineral Waste Directive Article 5 (EU Directive 2006/EC), imposes Sydvaranger Gruve AS to operate as sustainable as possible through the minimization, recycling and disposal of mineral waste. Possible projects are the production of crushed stone products from gråberget the Bjørnevatn, use of waste from the separation process as fillers, to the sea floor covering and as aggregates for concrete and asphalt. There will also be looked at opportunities for exploitation as raw materials for silikatbaserte products.
