Wind power

Wind Power Park in mining area

Wind power
Troms Kraft and Sydvaranger Gruve AS is planning a wind park at Bjørnevatn outside Kirkenes.

Troms Kraft and Sydvaranger Gruve AS has signed an agreement giving Troms Kraft permission to examine the possibility of building a wind farm on Sydvaranger Gruve AS property in the mining area Bjørnevatn. The area is regulated for industrial purposes and is about 25 square kilometers.

Sydvaranger Gruve AS is a large consumer of electrical energy and mining activities will in future have a significant energy demand. A wind farm will be able to supply us and oppredningsverket with renewable energy. In addition, it will be possible to contribute to the electrification of railways and other infrastructure in the port area and the activity related to future oil operations with energy from the wind farm.

During April / May 2009 start Troms Kraft wind measurements in the area. The measurements will take about one year. If the results show that this is a suitable area for wind power production, Troms Kraft continue the process and apply for a license to build and operate wind power plants on the property.
The licensing process is extensive and is divided into several phases: notification, impact assessment, consultations and finalization of licensing. It will take from four to six years from the message sent to a license is issued.

The size of the wind farm is not fixed, but we see opportunities to build a wind farm with about 20 wind turbines, which together can provide an output of 150 GWh. This corresponds to consumption of 7,500 households. Investment costs for a wind farm of this size will be over 700 million.

The project will give us more benefits, both environmentally and economically. The wind farm will make it possible for us to develop Sydvaranger Mine to become a "green" mining, self-sufficient in energy from a renewable source.

A wind farm will give the community great economic impact in the development phase and period of operation in terms of port fees, purchase of local services, tax revenues to the municipality as well as employment. Only in the development phase will be purchased local services for about 100 million.
